The last two weeks we have had incidents with Jason suddenly not feeling well. Last Monday we had a fever during the night. Last Friday he wasn't well at school and this week up and down. His sister has bronchitis and he has been quite congested in the nose causing a post nasal drip and I was worried he was catching it so I have been nebbing him. His bloods today showed that his red cell count is low, neutrophils are low, his platelets are high, his magnesium is high, albumin low and bilirubin low. His paed feels that maybe he has a bacterial infection so we are treating the symptoms now and we have taken a throat swab for viruses. We have been nebbing 2 hourly, have started Acc 200 for the nose and sinuses and nasal sprays. I will continue with treatment at home but he is fine within himself. All happy and playful - just something brewing possibly. Earlier we had a fever but that could be a side effect of the polygam which he commonly gets.
These polygam infusions just come around far too quickly and yes they are very tiring and hard BUT I am grateful that we have this treatment that can boost Jason's immune system and help him fight off infections. A lot of people ask me how long we are going to have treatment for. Well with Jason it will probably be indefinitely, it's either that or a bone marrow transplant (which we don't want to do). He has combined primary immunodeficiency. Basically he is lacking the functioning T cells, B cells and NK cells which are all your "fighter cells" (immune system) enabling you to fight off infections. Jason simply cannot fight off infections on his own as he lacks these "fighter cells" therefore has to have polygam which is human blood plasma (a clear liquid) that he has via a drip every 3 weeks. It is basically like a blood transfusion. Blood plasma is prepared by spinning a tube of fresh blood containing a solution that prevents the blood from clotting until the blood cells fall to the bottom of the tube. The blood plasma is then drawn out.
So it is now 22:30 and Jason has been running a fever and shivering for a while now. We are waiting for meds to bring the fever down and will be staying the night to monitor him. The fever could be from the polygam as fevers are a side effect but it could also be him not well - only time will tell. Poor little man is lying here babbling (he does this with fevers) and shivering. I can't feed him because with the fevers he will get nauseous and gag on food.
What a LONG day. Please keep Jason in your prayers xxx.
